The challenge
“Since migrating our most critical jobs and notebooks, we’ve seen a significant increase in data governance and collaboration efficiency, enhancing compliance posture, increasing time-to-insight, and better business decisions.”
MissionWired needed to migrate to Unity Catalog to leverage Databricks capabilities such as Unified Governance and Security, advancements in the Data Intelligence Platform, and data lineage , with a priority on Serverless Jobs. Realizing it’d be worth it to partner with a Unity Catalog migration specialist, they turned to Databricks for guidance. Databricks recommended Blueprint as the preferred external partner to ensure the migration was completed efficiently and accurately.
The solution
From the start, the Blueprint team recognized that our client’s environment was mature and well-organized. With strong security measures already in place and a clear migration plan, the project began smoothly. Blueprint initiated an assessment of their existing Hive Metastore using the Lakehouse Optimizer Unity Catalog Module, by the migration to Unity Catalog within their workspaces. A comprehensive knowledge transfer on the target state was also conducted. Beyond the initial scope, the team also helped with refactoring, data migration, quality assurance, and post-migration training. The entire migration was completed within six weeks, ahead of schedule and within budget. This allowed us to include these additional components, thanks to the Blueprint team’s expertise, ensuring a seamless process with no issues.
Impact
By migrating to Unity Catalog, MissionWired can now achieve cost savings by leveraging Serverless Jobs for their most impactful workloads and gain improved visibility into their data lineage. Unity Catalog also positions MissionWired to adopt future roadmap features while benefiting from many of its data governance capabilities. With the Lakehouse Optimizer deployed, they can receive near real-time recommendations on how to optimize their lakehouse for improved efficiency, performance, and orchestration. The Blueprint team exceeded expectations by 238% with the initial target of migrating 60 notebooks and delivering 143.
