A low trust approach to migrations

By the Blueprint Team

The cybersecurity world is moving towards a zero trust philosophy, maintaining vigilance through continuous questioning and validation. Why aren’t we doing the same with cloud migrations?

The top priority for companies moving from outdated tech stacks to more modernized architecture has largely been the migration’s effect on the top-line—how will it help get to market faster or capture more revenue?

Now facing an economic slowdown, we are seeing a shift in priorities to a single core metric: Total Cost of Ownership, or TCO.

TCO refers to the overall cost associated with owning and operating a particular asset or system over its entire lifecycle. In the context of migrating data platforms for an enterprise, understanding TCO involves an analysis that assesses both direct costs of migration, such as software licenses, hardware, and implementation fees, and indirect costs, such as downtime, lost productivity, and potential disruptions to business operations.

To conduct a thorough analysis, it’s necessary to consider a range of factors that include the size and complexity of the data environment, the scalability and flexibility of the new platform, the level of support and training required for staff, and the potential impact on business continuity. While the TCO analysis is largely an estimate or forecast, the information it gleans can inform the cost-effectiveness of migrating to a new data platform, help to mitigate unforeseen expenses with a realistic budget and timeline.

Given the complex and dynamic factors that go into a TCO analysis and the myriad of dependencies that exist within a large-scale project like this, the decision to invest in a cloud migration is ultimately based on trust.

  • Trust that the platform can deliver on what it promises.
  • Trust that the architecture is well-designed to meet current and future needs.
  • Trust in speed-to-value that enables increased productivity and net-new opportunities.
  • Trust in the engineers to execute best practices.

The opportunities for a lapse in any of the above are great, and the impact of that lapse—or breach of trust—can have long-term implications for the business. This is where Blueprint comes in.

  • We have extensive experience in building modernized data estates with a best-in-class platform, Databricks.
  • Our MDE architecture has been validated by both customers (link to project stories) and Databricks as an official Brickbuilders Migration Partner.
  • We ensure speed-to-value with our proven, agile modernization methodologies and our in-house accelerators

We also offer proprietary tooling that provides constant monitoring of performance and costs: Lakehouse Optimizer. The Lakehouse Optimizer moves us closer to a low trust, validated approach that optimizes the TCO of Databricks by maximizing performance for your specific needs and tracks costs at a granular level, more accurate forecasts and tracking to budgets.
